October Birthstone Highlight

October Birthstone Highlight

Individuals born in October get to choose between two birthstones – opal and tourmaline! October’s birthstones offer a full spectrum of gems to suit anyone’s personal style.

Opal & Tourmaline overview:

  • Opal’s kaleidoscopic play-of-color can suit many changing moods and tastes to make this gem appropriate for anyone
  • Dozens of opal varieties exist, but only a few like Fire Opal & Boulder Opal are universally recognized
  • Color is the key factor of opal quality. Dark backgrounds provide more contrast against vivid play-of-color, making black opal more highly valued than milky white varieties
  • The most expensive tourmaline are the green to violet colors that are often called “electric” or “neon” by the trade
  • Tourmaline is desirable because of its range of color options, and it’s hardness makes for very wearable jewelry

Caring for & cleaning these gemstones:

Opal
  • The only safe way to clean opal is with warm, soapy water
  • Opals are sensitive to heat or excessive dryness
Tourmaline
  • Warm, soapy water is the best method for cleaning tourmaline
  • Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are not recommended

Expert Tips On Jewelry Care & Service

Jewelry is one of our most intimate and cherished accessories. Understanding how to care for and protect your jewelry can make a world of difference in maintaining its beauty and keeping your pieces sparkling for years to come! Take a look at our tips to best care for your jewelry:

Jewelry Inspecition

1. Did you know jewelry should be cleaned & inspected by a professional every 3-6 months?

Oils from lotions, soap & even touching your jewelry can cloud the appearance of your precious jewelry and in many cases can mask visibility to damage.  Our professional cleaning systems are far superior than any home treatment and allows our experts to properly inspect your jewelry for things such as loose prongs or clasps and chips or cracks in your gemstones. By having your jewelry cleaned & inspected on a regular basis, you can ensure your jewelry is well maintained & sparkling bright!

White Gold Ring

2. Did you know your discolored white gold can be easily fixed?

You may notice over time that your once bright white gold is starting to look a bit yellow.  Without proper care or even just natural wear, discoloration can occur.  Gold is naturally yellow and to achieve white gold, it is mixed with alloys to develop that bright white color.  If you have any discolored white gold jewelry, it can be easily fixed by having your jewelry plated with Rhodium.  Rhodium is naturally white metal and can make your jewelry look brand new!

Jewelry Box

3. Properly store your jewelry

We often find jewelry that has been tangled with knots, tarnished or damaged and could have easily been avoided.  Invest in a simply jewelry box to properly organize & store your precious jewelry.  Get in the habit of cleaning your jewelry before stowing away to prevent oils and dirt from setting.  Keep your sterling silver in anti-tarnish pouches which keeps air exposure out.  Lastly,  give each piece of jewelry it’s own place – this way they wont rub against each other causing wear or damage & you’ll always know where to find them!

Ring Dish

4. Take your jewelry off when you take your shoes off!

Every day tasks can be rough on your precious jewelry.  Working out with weights can shift prongs and warp your rings, harsh cleaning chemicals can tarnish your metals & lotions and soaps can make your gemstones appear cloudy.  Invest in ring dishes or a safe container (for the gym or traveling) so that you have a safe place to store your jewelry – get in the habit of keeping your jewelry in one place, the only thing worse than dirty jewelry is missing jewelry!

Jewelry Appraisal

5. Have your jewelry re-appraised every 5-7 years

Most insurance companies require an up to date appraisal.  The market changes daily and the value of your jewelry vary – you don’t want to over pay on a premium for your jewelry or worse, find out that your jewelry is worth more than your insurance covers.  Our Certified Gemologist Appraisers from the American Gem Society have over 35 years experience in appraising jewelry

What is a Treasure Chest Grown Diamond?

Treasure Chest Grown – A New Choice in Diamonds

Treasure Chest Grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to their mined counterparts. The only difference is origin. It’s impossible for the naked eye to differentiate between a grown diamond and a mined diamond. Even a gemologist with a microscope cannot tell the difference!

Grown-Vs-Mined

Treasure Chest Grown diamonds are graded by the same leading independent labs that grade mined diamonds. “Lab Grown” and a report number is laser-inscribed on the girdle of each diamond. *All lab grown diamonds over 0.25 carat are graded and laser-inscribed.

How Treasure Chest Grown Diamonds Are Made

Treasure Chest Grown diamonds are produced by utilizing two gem-quality diamond creation processes: Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT). In both processes, a diamond seed is placed in an environment that contains carbon. Under suitably controlled conditions, the diamond grows, atom-by-atom, layer-by-layer.

Lab Grown vs. Mined Diamonds

Both have the same physical, chemical and optical properties and emerge as rough diamonds. Both have the same hardness, specific gravity, refractive index, and dispersion; are polished using the same equipment and techniques; and have the same brilliance, fire, and sparkle. Both are, in fact, diamonds!

Our Quality

The cut, color and clarity of our colorless, near-colorless and fancy color diamonds are consistent with very high quality mined diamonds. In fact, all of our colorless lab grown diamonds are type IIa, which is the purest type of diamond found in nature and accounts for only 2 percent of the global production of mined diamonds.

What is a Treasure Chest Diamond?

Treasure Chest Diamonds are the pride and passion of Michaels Jewelers, but what exactly makes a Treasure Chest Diamond so unique and special? For those who have done a little research on diamond buying, you will know that cut determines 60% of the value of the diamond and 100% of the sparkle. Michaels Jewelers strives for excellence and wanted to represent a collection that was as perfect as one could achieve.

So in 1948, Michaels Jewelers introduced “Treasure Chest” diamonds with the assurance that they would always represent the finest cut diamonds in the world and have superior light performance when compared to any other diamonds.  It begins with our exclusive relationship with the best cutters in the world that cut from only 1% of the finest diamonds they receive.

Michaels provided the customer further peace of mind by guaranteeing the grading on all of its diamonds. This includes color, clarity, and cut. This guarantee now extends to the value proposition with Michaels 120% price guarantee on all Treasure Chest Diamonds.

Today, Michaels offers a variety of Treasure Chest Diamonds:

Treasure Chest Ideal

The coveted AGS platinum grading report is combined with the optimal alignment demonstrated by the hearts and arrows pattern.

Treasure Chest Hearts & Arrows

Treasure Chest Princess Cut & Cushion Cut

The princess cut is recognized as the most brilliant of the fancy shaped diamonds. After decades of research and refinement we can now offer our customers a princess cut that receives the highest possible cut grade from the American Gem Society Ideal Light Performance, Ideal Polish and Ideal Symmetry. The Treasure Chest Cushion is the only cushion cut on the market cut specifically for brilliance. It is backed with the AGS grading report and Michaels’ exclusive Love for Life Guarantee.

Treasure Chest 89

The Treasure Chest 89 Diamond has 89 facets versus the traditional 58 facets of a round brilliant cut diamond. This light dispersion creates the absolute maximum brilliance and sparkle in the Treasure Chest 89 Diamond. This beautiful pattern creates prisms of light which is what the eye sees as scintillation. In return, the Treasure Chest 89 Diamond appears to be a higher color and better clarity than and ordinary round brilliant diamond.

Treasure Chest Wedding Bands

All of our wedding bands have diamonds that are perfectly matched for cut, color and clarity. We carry different total weights and qualities, including our precision Hearts & Arrows, to meet any budget.

Treasure Chest Jewelry

We have partnered with some of the finest designers in the world to create a full line of Treasure Chest Jewelry. Crafted from the finest materials, using the best artisans these pieces feature the Treasure Chest Hearts & Arrows diamonds. Every diamond .002ct (2/100th of a carat) and larger are guaranteed to be cut to the “Treasure Chest” standard.

Treasure Chest Grown

This is the newest addition to the Treasure Chest family! Treasure Chest Grown Diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to their mined counterparts. The only difference is origin. It is impossible for the naked eye to differentiate between a grown diamond and a mined diamond. Even a gemologist with a microscope cannot tell the difference!

January Birthstone Highlight

Today we’re highlighting the January birthstone, garnet. Red garnets have a long history, but this gemstone comes in a wide variety of colors from greens, oranges, pinkish oranges, deeply saturated purplish reds, and even some blues. The price of the piece will likely increase for more rare colors like green or blue.

Here are some quick facts about this gemstone:

Garnet

  • The garnet is so durable, remnants of garnet jewelry can be found as far back as the Bronze Age
  • The garnet symbolizes deep and lasting friendship
  • Can also be used to toast a 2nd wedding anniversary
  • Find a cut that spreads light evenly over the surface of the garnet. This will help bring out the overall beauty and color of the gemstone.

Randy’s Story – Ring in the Holiday Contest

Check out Randy’s story – the winner of the 2017 Chaz & AJ Ring in the Holiday Contest.

“On June 13th 2016 my girl and I were on our way home from Laconia motorcycle bike week. We made it all the way to Connecticut and at 10 after midnight on i91 in Enfield, CT. A drunk and drug induced driver ran us over at 107 miles per hour. I heard my girl scream to help and then we were hit. She was killed instantly and I was thrown 100 yards down the highway and then he ran me over again and drove an extra mile down the road with me stuck under the car. The drive never called 911 and I tried to crawl to save my girl and collapsed 20 feet from her body. I flat lined 4 times broke every bone in my body plus a severe tbi along with major internal injuries. I have had 40 surgeries most of them to fix my legs and keep them. Along with more to come.

Since loosing my girl and everything else from the crash I found my best friend Kelly. She has been there every day helping me and encouraging me. She has been there mentally and physically. She doesn’t care that I am now in a wheelchair or that I’m disabled. She loves me just how I am. It is a deep and soul connection every time I see her I get butterflies. I believe that my deceased girl Caroline sent her to me. Kelly has given me the true meaning of love and most of all of life. I push and work hard every day to get back to walking. It will never be the same as my normal life but i except it. I’m on social security and cannot afford to get Kelly a ring. We have talked about it but it would be my dream and a blessing for her to open it up on Christmas. With your help i would feel for once since my accident like a real man. So if you could please take my story into consideration I would love it. I’m not or never was out to get free things or help from anyone but this is a dream to make my best friend and my love happy. Thank you Chaz and AJ! If you would like I could also show you proof of medical records and a news article. Thanks again!!”

P.S. It’s a surprise…Don’t tell his girlfriend!
